Hundreds of years ago lived a happily married couple in Langkawi Island. The couple was blessed with wealth. Their bird nest business was doing excellent and their farm was always flourishing. Their luck became even better when they were blessed with a beautiful baby girl. They named their baby Mahsuri.

When Mahsuri grew up, everyone in Langkawi Island knew about her. Her beauty and her grace were unsurpassed by any other woman on the island. She treated everyone with kind respect be it towards the poor or towards the rich. Everyone was charmed by her and showered her family with gifts. The news of this fine lady came to the ears of Dato’ Seri Karma Jaya, a rich businessman who was already married to a women named Mahura. Upon hearing how impressive Mahsuri was, Dato’ Seri Kerma Jaya became curious and wanted to see her for himself.

DATO’ SERI KERMA JAYA: She sounds wonderful…certainly fitting enough to be my second wife!
DOYOK & SAPOK: Absolutely Dato’…you and her were made for each other! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Dato’ went ahead and visited the house that Mahsuri and her family stayed. The meeting between Dato’ and Mahsuri was very brief but it was enough for the Dato to fell in love with her.

DATO’ SER KERMA JAYA: Whooooah such stunning beauty, I’m flying in cloud nine! Hiyah! Hiyah! Hiyah!

Dato’ Seri Kerma Jaya wished to marry Mahsuri. But his wife, Mahura, was quick to object.

DATO’ SERI KARMA JAYA: Yipes! I just remembered, I’m already married!
MAHURA: You dirty old man! Don’t you ever think I would let you marry her! If you are so fond of her then let our son Wan Derus marry her instead!

After gaining the agreement of Mahsuri’s parents, the wedding between Mahsuri and Wan Derus took place immediately. One day, Wan Derus went off for a business trip abroad.
MAHSURI: Farewell my dear! Please take good care of yourself!
WAN DERUS: Certainly, my love! Do wait for my return!

When Wan Derus was away, Mahsuri lived with her mother. It was during that period a poor vagrant named Deramang appeared. His pockets were empty but he had a melodious voice and was skilled in poetry.

DERAMANG: Birds between clouds, searching for worms within rose apple trees…
CROWD: Such charming voice…
Mahsuri felt pity for Deramang’s poor living condition. Hence with the permission of her parents, Mahsuri invited Deramang to live at her house for a few days. Deramang’s great talent in poetry pulled in even more visitors to Mahsuri’s house. This made Mahsuri’s mother-in-law, Mahura, turn jealous and angry.

MAHURA: Hmph! First she wanted my husband…and now she wishes to break my son’s heart! I will not allow it! Just you wait, Mahsuri! I will know what to do!

After scheming for 4 days and 3 nights, Mahura finally gets an idea.
MAHURA: Honey…I couldn’t believe what I just saw, but Mahsuri was being intimate with Deramang… All this while our son is abroad, she took the opportunity to be with another man!
DATO’ SERI KERMA JAYA: Another man?! That is a sin! Doyok! Sapok! Arrest Mahsuri and bring her here!

Mahsuri was shocked at this false accusation but could not do anything to stop them from capturing her.

MAHSURI: I’m innocent!! This is all a lie!

Mahsuri’s parent did all they could to convince Dato’ Seri Kerma of Mahsuri’s innocence but to no avail. Under the orders of the Dato’, Mahsuri was brought to Padang Hangus for execution. Mahsuri was tied to a tamarind tree.

MAHSURI: Let me go! I’ve been wrongly accused! I’m did not do anything!
DATO’ KERMA JAYA: Acting innocent are we? That worthless poor man Deramang is the one you choose! Why did you not pick me?! Enough! Execute her!

Dato’ Seri Kerma Jaya tried stabbing Mahsuri with spears. But oddly, both spears failed to get though her body.
DOYOK & SAPOK: What’s going on here?

DOYOK: Ignore it! Just keep stabbing her! Hiyah! Hiyah! Hiyah!
MAHSURI: You’re wasting your time!
DOYOK: Hiyah! Hiyah! Hiyah!

To avoid any further torturing and embarrassment, Mahsuri decided to tell the secret of her invulnerability.

MAHSURI: If you wish to kill me so much…then kill me with the magic spear at my house…
DATO’ SERI KERMA JAYA: Hmm is that so? Very well, collect that magic spear!
DOYOK & SAPOK: Yes Dato’! Hiyah! Hiyah! Hiyah! Hiyah!
DATO’ SERI KERMA JAYA: Execute her!

When they stabbed Mahsuri with the magic spear, white blood started to pour out of her body. Before breathing her last breath, Mahsuri laid a curse on Langkawi Island.

MAHSURI: I swear that Langkawi Island will never be at peace and turn barren for seven generations!

Several years later Langkawi Island was attacked by the Siam Empire. Dato’ Seri Kerma Jaya, Mahura and their entire family was killed by the invading army. Many locals were captured and taken out of the island. Dato’ Seri Kerma Jaya’s army who could no longer hold the island
decided to burn the rice fields and the military supplies before retreating. In a blink of an eye, Langkawi Island became barren for seven generations.
